Increasing apprehensions have emerged over the possibility of military engagement involving Horn of Africa neighbors, Ethiopia and the Eritrean government, as confrontational rhetoric has escalated in the last month.

What Did Ethiopian Officials Stated?

Ethiopia's, being landlocked, calls for entry to the sea coast through Eritrean territory has triggered a fierce war of words.

PM Abiy Ahmed previously announced in last year that his government's sea access was an existential matter, statements that Eritrea rejected.

Ties between the neighboring nations have often been tense. Following a prolonged struggle for freedom, the Eritrean state, which has a 1,350km (840-mile) maritime frontage, legally broke away from Ethiopia in 1993, rendering it landlocked.

Five years later, a border war erupted in which over a hundred thousand people lost their lives.

Current Comments from Ethiopian Government

Abiy and army chief General Birhanu Jula have publicly asserted ownership of Eritrean coastal city of the port of Assab – some 60 km from the frontier - and hinted at the wish to capture it through military means.

Recently, Abiy said Ethiopia's "blunder" of losing access to the Red Sea as a due to Eritrea secession would be "addressed soon".

Ethiopia's ambassador to neighboring Kenya, former General Bacha Debele, said that the port was "belonging to Ethiopia" and would be given back "using武力".

Eritrea's Reaction to the Threats

Despite continuous warnings from Ethiopian officials, Asmara's position has been limited to brief comments on X from Communications Head Yemane G..

He has rejected Ethiopia's demand for maritime entry describing it as "hazardous" and a "toxic agenda" of "irredentism" – a policy of claiming back previous domains.

Government spokespeople alerted on mid-September that moves to validate "flagrant aggression" would have major implications for Ethiopia and its regional partners and is a "redline that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Security Activities on the Border

There have been little evidence of significant troop deployments in the boundary zones between the two countries.

Nonetheless, in the country, government media has broadcast completion events of numerous trainees at different defense facilities.

The leader of personnel division of the armed forces, Lt Gen Hachalu Sheleme, stated recently in an interview that the military was in a "reliable position" as "numerous of recruits" were joining it, which he said was "a warning to our adversaries".

Previous Roots of the Tension

For more than half a century from the late 19th century, the territory was ruled by Italian rulers.

After the end of Italian rule, it was then administered by the UK forces before becoming a integrated region of Ethiopia.

However in the early 1960s the ruler terminated this agreement and the region became completely integrated into the Ethiopian state.

A thirty-year armed struggle followed, concluding with Ethiopia's defeat in the early 1990s. Sovereignty was then endorsed by voters in a plebiscite in 1993.

Briefly in the 1990s, there were positive ties between the governments in Addis Ababa and Eritrea's capital, but they fell out over the specific demarcation of their common border, leading to war in 1998.

Though this ended in a ceasefire agreement in 2000, it was incompletely executed, and the both countries remained at loggerheads.

This changed in 2018, when the Prime Minister made overtures to Eritrea's leader Isaias Afwerki. The two agreed to a statement that the war was finished – a move that earned Abiy the prestigious award.

The two governments were then partners in Ethiopia's 2020-2022 internal conflict in the northern region.

However diplomatic connections have subsequently deteriorated again.
